What is counselling?
Counselling is a chance to talk over issues that might be disturbing, with a trained professional who can assist and guide. A new perspective for handling issues, problem solving techniques and coping mechanisms are highlighted.
How do I know if I need counselling?
If you feel you are not functioning well emotionally, socially or academically, our caring and congenial counsellors will conduct an assessment and offer professional recommendation towards a positive change.
How would I tell about my problem?
You may present your problem however you like. Sometimes, there are pauses and one may say things unexpectedly. The counsellor is there to help you resolve issues and gradually address all that are pertinent.
What is the difference between a psychiatrist and a psychologist?
A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who has specialized in psychiatry, and commonly uses medication to treat clients. A psychologist on the other hand is qualified and trained to handle cognitive, emotional and social aspects of behaviour and help clients understand and deal with issues that affect their life.
How much will I have to pay for the C3A services?
All consultations and services are free of charge for the entire NUST community
Does seeing a psychologist mean that I have a weak personality?
It is no sign of weakness but of strength that you are ready and willing to address issues rather than ignore them. It takes a lot of courage to talk about what is affecting your life and to find ways to resolve it. The will to change for the better is the way to ‘Self’ development.
What about confidentiality?
In a manner consistent with our ethical and professional standards, no client information is released on or off campus. C3A will not give information shared in a counselling session to anyone, including friends, parents, teachers, deans, colleagues, administration etc. This information with not be used in academic or promotional profiling.
How many counselling sessions will I need?
The number of sessions would depend on the nature and type of the issues, also the client’s willingness. Initially, weekly meetings are encouraged which may be reduced to need based sessions.
Do I always have to be physically present for counselling or can I have online counselling sessions?
We always encourage and appreciate the personal presence of clients; however appointments and urgent information could be handled through emails and over telephones.
