Assistant Professor Saheeb Ahmed Kayani has successfully collaborated with a national industry to indigenize two imported products namely leather fleshing blades and leather shaving blades used in the tanning of leather and to develop the technology and know-how required to locally fabricate these products. In a pioneering effort and a historic first for the country, the fleshing and shaving blades’ industrial designs, and the expertise and know-how for their indigenous production has been successfully transferred to the industry through signing of Pakistan’s first ever academia-industry intellectual property licensing agreement in 2018. Based on the designs and the technology developed by the faculty member, the production of fleshing and shaving blades has commenced with a national brand name and the products will be used by around 150 leather processing firms located in different parts of Pakistan. By virtue of this significant achievement, department of mechanical engineering has the unique honor of not only leading the university but also setting a precedence in Pakistan in technology indigenization/development and transfer, thus distinctively contributing towards import substitution and self reliance, and achieving the national objective of building a knowledge based economy.
