Specialization: Molecular Virology /Viral Hepatitis/Viral Immunology/ Liver Cancer

M.Phil (Stem Cell Biology) CEMB, University of the Punjab, Lahore; PhD (Molecular Virology), CEMB, University of the Punjab, Lahore, Pakistan

Dr. Sobia has earned her doctoral degree  with specialization in Molecular Virology from CEMB, University of the Punjab, Lahore, pakistan. She has deciphered  the role of P2X receptors in HCV induced liver fibrosis in her PhD research. Her  research group is working on viral hepatitis particularly Hepatitis C Virus (HCV).   Her areas of expertise are HCV and host cell interactions and HCV induced immunopathogenesis. This includes HCV associated perturbed signalling pathways, role of viral and host factors in treatment response to HCV, HCV induced immunopathogenesis, molecular mechanisms underlying hepato-carcinogenesis, hepato-regeneration, and pathophysiology of P2X receptors in hepatobiliary carcinomas. Based on the findings of her research, she  has introduced “Hepatitis C treatment outcome tests”, which is serving the medical professionals regarding prognosis of HCV therapy. She is  also working on alternative treatment options (Phage therapy) for diseases like Urinary Tract Infections. Additionally, her research group is  working on product-based research as well. She has received a grant from Higher Education Commission of Pakistan (HEC) to work on the designing and  development of non invasive diagnostic kit for endemic viral infections in Pakistan. She is hopeful that  would be able to introduce first indigenous non-invasive kits for the diagnosis of Hepatitis C, B, and HIV. This will surely help to significantly reduce the burden of epidemic viral infections in Pakistan.
