The primary focus of her research career has been bread wheat centering around the genetic resources across its three genomes for integrating new allelic variation for crop production and yield maximization which is sine qua non to ensure food security. Her research has covered genomic diversity across vital research facets of basic, strategic and applied dimensions. The effort embraces multiple disciplines that are categorized as genetic resources, quality, cytogenetics, molecular cytogenetics, biochemical genetics, pre-breeding, physiology, pathology, breeding, mapping, gene cloning and gene editing. She has been trained on wheat rusts, gene mapping and marker-assisted selection at Plant Breeding Institute, University of Sydney, Australia. She has also worked in USDA Genotyping and Sequencing Lab, Kansas State University, USA for one and a half years where she was trained on making Genotyping-by-sequencing (GBS) libraries. In addition, she also developed a direct multiplex sequencing protocol, which is a useful assay for quick high-throughput screening of SNPs and GBS markers in bread wheat. In addition, she has worked at Cornell University, USA for three years, where she first worked on WheatCAP project for a year. This project is a nationally coordinated consortium of public wheat breeders, molecular geneticists, high-throughput genotyping laboratories, database experts and educators focused on increasing wheat yields. This will help identifying and deploying beneficial alleles for genes regulating the spike/grain sink dynamics by developing genetic tools to facilitate breeding of improved grain yield. Her current focus is editing TaGW2 gene in breadwheat using one winter and one spring cultivar; Glenn and Medina. GW2 encodes a RING-type protein with E3 ubiquitin ligase activity that negatively regulates grain width through control of cell division in the spikelet hull. Loss-of-function mutations in the coding sequence, or interference with the expression level of GW2 has previously resulted in enhanced grain width, weight and yield.
