What is Civil Engineering?

Civil Engineering is the mother of all engineering’s. Civil engineering is a professional engineering discipline that   deals with the design, construction, and maintenance of the physical and naturally built environment, including works    like roads, bridges, canals, dams, and buildings.

​Why a career as a Civil Engineer?

 From the pyramids of Egypt to the exploration of space, civil engineers have always faced the Challenges of the future advancing civilization and improving our quality of life. When you construct or design a structure it gives you a lot of sense of achievement. 

​What departments are operating under NICE?

There are four departments operating under NICE namely

  • Structural Engineering
  • Geotechnical Engineering
  • Hydraulics and Water Resources
  • Survey and Geodesy
  • Transportation Engineering
​What programs are being offered at NICE?

Following Undergraduate (UG) and Postgraduate (PG) programs are being offered at NICE and are as followed.

UG: Civil Engineering

PG: (MS and Phd) in following subject

  • Geotechnical Engineering 
  • Transportation Engineering

​What do Civil Engineers do?

Civil engineers Plan, design and manage, and maintain the physical infrastructure and environmental protection systems of our society. They design, plan, construct and manage physical facilities, including roadways, dams, buildings and pipelines. They may own a construction firm, be a partner in a consulting company, or work for a government agency or corporation. They can find work anywhere in the world, because physical facilities are needed everywhere.

Graduates with a civil engineering degree also enter other professions or career paths. These graduates have a broad, problem solving background from their civil engineering studies, which can provide an excellent preparation for many careers. Indeed, engineering might be considered to be the "liberal arts" of the 21st Century. Civil engineering alumni have also pursued careers in other fields like medicine, law, military service, management and software industries.

​What are the contributions of civil engineers?
Civil Engineers are responsible for building the infrastructure of any society. They are responsible for analysis, design, construction, upgrading and maintenance of all forms of infrastructure for better quality of life and sustainable economy.
​How long does it take to complete Bachelors in engineering degree in Civil Engineering at NICE?

 A regular student who does not repeat any semester completes BE in 8 semester’s, i.e., 4 years.

​How many semesters are offered in a year and UG degree completed in how many semesters?

NICE offers two regular semesters i.e. fall and spring. Summer semester is optional. Degree is completed after 8 regular semesters.

​What is mean by the elective courses?

Students of 6th, 7th, and 8th semester are given option to select one subject of interest to be taken as elective depth pursuing these programs needs to plan ahead in selecting elective courses.

​What is the usual semester load?
A regular semester has 17-21 credits hours.
​What is the usual strength of an undergraduate class?
Each class in NICE is designed for seating of 60 students however we keep about 40-50 students in a section.
​What is required for the Bachelors in Engineering in Civil Engineering at NICE?
Students at NICE under goes 4 years Engineering Bachelors programs in Civil Engineering at NNICE. First Year of Programs comprise of general subjects. One and Half year in engineering (predominantly in civil engineering), a one and half year of depth courses in civil engineering.

​Please give some information about NICE library?
NICE has a fully functional library equipped with a collection of more than 11000 books and journals. NICE library provides all material required to excel in every students academic career. With the provision of a comfortable, study environment, the library is the perfect place for students to sit and research. NICE Library is fully furnished in all respect with comfortable environments, and necessary equipment including computers, photocopy machines, scanner and printers. Wireless and line internet is also available in the library to access other international and HEC library.

​Does NICE has a computer center and what facilities are available in computer center of NICE?
NICE has a state of art computer center. There are 72 desktop computers available in the NICE computer center connected to internet. In addition computer center has printing and scanning facility available to the students. NICE has also print management software through which students can print there documents from any computer within NICE using a personal login and password. Printing facility is provided at a cost lower than the market.
​How advisors are assigned to different groups of Civil Engineering undergraduate students undertaking final year project?
Each undergraduate group in Civil Engineering is assigned a faculty advisor. Faculty advisors usually stay with a student throughout their final year project. The faculty advisors and students meet weekly to discuss programs of study, career plans or student problems. Students also seek advice from other faculty members or staff in the department for specialized fields of study or internship opportunities.
​Are there any girls students too at NICE?
Yes there are girls students enrolled at NICE. There is an exclusive girls lounge and a separate powder room.
​What research facilities are available at NICE?
We have fully functional Labs in all departments with state-of-the-art equipment and research facility. In addition we have highly experienced and qualified faculty who supervises and assists in research projects.
​What is the starting pay for civil engineering graduates of NICE?
More than 95% of our CE students get employment within 6 months upon graduation. The salary does fluctuate from year to year, ranging from Rs 30000 to Rs 100000.
​Does NICE or NUST offer any type of financial assistance to UG and PG students?
Yes, there are couples of scholarship/financial assistance program available to students that includes NUST need based scholarship, SCEE need based scholarship and deferment of fees. In addition students can also get financial assistance from various government programs. However due to limited number of vacancies for these scholarships interested students are advised not to solely plan on these scholarships.
​What is the employment rate of NICE?
Our first Civil engineering batch graduated in 2012. Majority of the graduates are now employed in some of the most reputed engineering organization of country such as NESPAK, Descon, Halcrow, NLC, etc. Some of them are also working abroad. Whereas some graduates are enrolled in PG programs.
​What is the regular schedule for classes?
UG
UG courses are offered in between specific timings from 9 AM to 4 PM. Five days a week
PG
PG courses are offered in the evening from 5 PM to 8 PM at NICE. Three days a week
​What are the sports facilities available at NICE?
Available sport facilities include table tennis, cricket, football, and basketball. NUST gymnasium is under construction and is likely to be commissioned in next few months
​Is transport facility is available at NICE?
Yes, NUST transport department provide pick and drop for students and faculty at reasonable price.  Shuttle service is also available within the campus free of cost.
​What extra skills should one have before getting admission in NICE?
 Extra skills in Computer are helpful.
​Are study trips organized for students?
NICE administration organized study trips in each semester to various industries and organizations, ongoing projects and institutions commensurate with the subject requirements.
