As Operation Zarb-e-Azb continues to eliminate the most dangerous threats to our country, about 900,000 people of North Waziristan have been forced to leave their homes for the sake of their lives. These people are in dire need of basic life necessities.
NUST Community Service Club (NCSC) along with NUST Administration ran a relief campaign for the collection and raising funds. The funds generated in this campaign came from a massive donation drive conducted by the team, contribution from the alumni and NUST administration.
a. NUST Administration and faculty donated one day salary amounting to Rs 3.5 million.
b. NUST Alumni contributed Rs 150,000.
c. NCSC team collected Rs 1,450,000 from:
(1) Door to door donation drive in HQ NUST
(2) Donation drives in all schools and colleges of NUST
(3) Donation collection from Masjid-e-Rahmat after Namaz-e-Jumaa
(4) 3-day donation drive in Safa Gold Mall and Olive Gardens
(5) Donation collection from families with students coming to NUST for entry test
(6) Bank transfers resulting from Social Media Campaign and SMS circulation
The NUST administration decided to prioritize the assisting of the IDPs through the army. They also approved the suggestion of Col. Mehmood, who is a Wazir himself and belongs to Bannu, to take the responsibility for the 20 families who had taken refuge in Government Degree College Landi Jhalandar, District Bannu.
A student of NUST in Bannu, along with the help of Dr. Arshad of University of Science and Technology, Bannu, compiled the list of the families living there. One of the major problems identified was unavailability of sufficient water. Only one out of 24 hours of power supply with a voltage of 70 volts only was not sufficient to meet the power requirement of a tube well available there. After meeting with NUST Alumni President Mr. Ammar and MCS Alumni Mr. Mansoor, the alumni took the responsibility of providing a generator and regulator for the tube well. This generator is now functional.
Director Administration Mr. Arif Mahmud Siddiqui suggested providing some sports equipment and Eid gifts for the families to bring a feeling of “life is returning” in those families. The sports equipment, consisting of 150 bats, tennis balls, volleyballs and footballs, was provided by Col. Qaiser (Army Sports Dte). Eid gifts were purchased and packed by a team of students. Five days of shopping by the students resulted in following Eid gifts:
a. Unstitched clothes for ladies and gents
b. Shawls for ladies
c. Ready-made clothes for children
d. Toy cars for boys and Dolls for girls
e. Coloring Books and Pencils
f. Mehndi and bangles
g. Colorful hair pins and ponies for girls
h. Goody bags containing candies for children
i. Washing powder for the families
On Wednesday, July 23 2014, a team of 13 students, along with Director Administration Mr. Arif Mahmud Siddiqui, Col Mehmood and Assistant Manager Mr. Athar Mushtaq went to the college in Bannu to meet the IDPs. Keeping in line with the norms and traditions of the locals, only the girls interacted with the ladies. The distribution ceremony was divided into two different sides, the gents and the females’ side.
A cheque worth Rs 3.5 million was presented to Brig. Aftab Commd 475 Engrs Bde Gp/45 Engrs Div. The male students distributed Eid gifts among the men and children and the female students distributed among women and girls. Rs 5,000 in cash were given to each family by the students. The students spent almost two hours with the IDPs and army representatives, gaining first-hand knowledge of the conditions of the IDPs.
After feedback from the Army Authorities and the IDPs, the following further needs were identified:
b. Desert Coolers
c. Tubular charpai
