NUST Relief Campaign for IDPs (Phase III)

As Operation Zarb-e-Azb continues to eliminate the most dangerous threats to the country, about 900,000 people of North Waziristan have had to leave their homes and seek shelter at safer places.

NUST Community Service Club (NCSC), coupled with NUST Administration, started a fund raising campaign in July 2014. The massive donation drive received generous contributions from both the NUST administration and the University’s alumni. While the NUST employees and faculty donated a day’s salary each, amounting to Rs 3.5 million, the alumni contributed Rs 150,000. NCSC also collected Rs 1,450,000 though their donation campaign. During the first phase of the relief efforts, 22 families taking refuge In Government Degree College Landi Jhalandar, District Bannu, were provided with a dependable source of clean water. Sports equipment and Eid gifts were distributed amongst the families, in an effort to bring some normality to their lives. A cheque worth Rs 3.5 million was presented to Brig. Aftab, Comd 475 Engrs Bde Gp/45.

During the second phase of the relief effort, as the families were being forced out of the College owing to the start of the calendar year, NUST distributed a set of pedestal fans, tents and floor mats amongst them. Donated medicines worth Rs 1.35 million were also dropped off at Rural Community Hospital, District Dhomail, Bannu.

The most recent phase of the relief campaign was focused on IDPs dwelling in Swat. On the directives of Col. Mehmood and MCS Alumnus Mr Mansoor, a truck load of dry ration (including such items as flour, rice, tea, sugar, pulses, oil, salt, tea etc.) bought in from Multan was transported to Swat on Oct 24, 2014.

On Saturday, October 25, 2014, a team of six members from NCSC, accompanied by Mr Mansoor and Lt Col Tariq (52 Signals), followed the ration items sent to Swat. On their arrival, the Civil Administration in Swat briefed the team about the problems being faced by the IDPS, after they distributed the food items among the 86 Families gathered by DCO Swat.
