NUST grants exclusive licence of 4 IPs to Pharmatec Pakistan Pvt Ltd Karachi
Intellectual Capital Flowing from University to Industry

Taking the lead further in transferring intellectual capital to the industry, National University of Sciences & Technology (NUST) granted exclusive licence of four Intellectual Properties (IPs) to Pharmatec Pakistan Pvt Ltd, Karachi, a leading pharmaceutical company of Pakistan with international presence, on Friday, November 30, 2018. Dr Nassar Ikram, NUST Pro-Rector Research, Innovation & Commercialisation (RIC), and Dr Shahida Qaiser, Managing Director, Pharmatec signed the agreement for TB Spot and Smart Wound Management Device (SWMD), the 2 products which Pharmatec will manufacture and market under the licensed IPs. Prominent among others present at the occasion were Lt Gen Naweed Zaman, HI (M), (Retd), Rector NUST, CEO Pharmatec, Mr Pervez Hayat Noon, MD Pharmatec, Dr Shahida Qaisar and Mr Stephen J Martin, MD Bramart Healthcare Consultancy Limited, London. Three IPs belong to the product called Spot TB, a handheld robust electrochemical biosensor-based device for early TB detection. The technology has been developed by Dr Shahrukh from NUST Atta-ur-Rahman School of Applied Bio-Sciences (ASAB). Fourth IP belongs to the product namely Smart Wound Management Device (SWMD), a real-time wound health monitoring system coupled with tailorable drug delivery treatment options. This technology has been developed by Dr Murtaza Najabat Ali and Ms Marium Mir of NUST School of Mechanical & Manufacturing Engineering (SMME). 

Speaking at the occasion, Rector NUST appreciated the support of Pharmatec​ and its commitments towards collaborating with NUST across various areas for the betterment of society. Mr Pervez Hayat Noon, CEO Pharmatec acknowledged the contribution of product inventors and affirmed his company’s continued support to NUST. Pharmatec is amongst the first few companies setting up their Research Centres at NUST’s flagship project of National Science & Technology Park (NSTP), Pakistan’s first university-hosted STP that is set to operationalise in February 2019.

With the signing of these licensing agreements, NUST has licensed out 7 Intellectual Properties to the industry during the current year while its total number of IPs recently crossed the figure of 300, a landmark achievement.
