NUST Environment Club (NEC) organized World Environment Day (WED) at Institute of Environmental Sciences and Engineering (IESE) Seminar Hall on June 5, 2015.
World Environment Day is the United Nations’ principal vehicle for encouraging worldwide awareness and action for the environment. Over the years, it has grown to be a broad, global platform for public outreach that is widely celebrated by stakeholders in over 100 countries. It also serves as the “People’s Day” for doing something positive for the environment, galvanizing individual actions into a collective power that generates an exponential positive impact on the planet.
The chief guest for the event was Director Publishing and Students Affairs Dr Safdar Ali Shah. Adventure Club Pakistan was the platinum sponsor for the event. Apart from its core adventure-related activities, the Club also organizes programs of social and ecological importance.
The guest Speaker for the event was Mr Amir Jadoon, founder of Movement for Green Pakistan, and producer for PTV, who spoke on the preservation of Margalla hills. Next, two videos were played for the audience. The first, titled "Save our World,” was about conserving energy and managing waste properly. The second one, “A bottle’s Odyssey,” and showed the journey of a plastic water bottle over the years. This was followed by NEC executive Hamza Dar giving a presentation on the environmental issues in Pakistan, especially the matter of the extinction of wild species like blind dolphins.
Founder and President of The Adventure Club Pakistan Mr Tahir Imran Khan, who also serves as mentor for NUST Adventure Club, and is an accomplished writer, and award holder from the Ministry of Tourism Pakistan, took to the stage, next, to express his views on the environment and World Environment Day, commending NEC for their event planning skills.
Other activities at the event included an online competition for graphic designing, video making and essay writing on WED-related topics. An on-spot poster making competition was also organized to grill the talents of the participants.
The panel of judges included Dr Muhammad Zeeshan Ali Khan, Ms Erum Amir and Dr Faheem Khokhar from IESE and Lt Col (retd) Dr Abdul Jabbar Bhatti TBT receiver of the Pride of Performance award, Mr Tahir Imran Khan and Mr Rizwan Ahmed.
While the videos, graphic designs and posters for the online competition were displayed in front of the panel of judges, the winner of the poster-making competition was chosen by audience votes. The winners and runner ups were awarded participation certificates and cash prizes.
After the closing notes of the Chief Guest, the auspicious evening ended with a presentation of shields and certificates to the guests and judges.
