NUST Students Secure Bronze Medal at Global Kaggle Competition
We are proud to announce that a team of undergraduate Computer Engineers from the College of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering (EME), NUST, has secured an outstanding achievement in a global Kaggle competition focused on skin cancer detection and classifying malignant melanoma. Muhammad Asim Azhar, along with his team members Khuzaim Ishtiaq, Wahaaj Nasir, and Mueed Rauf, ranked 217th out of 2739 teams, placing them in the top 8% of solutions and earning a prestigious bronze medal.
Their innovative approach combined a soft voting ensemble of machine learning models, including XGBoost, Light Gradient Boosting Method (LGBM), and CatBoost. The team utilized a subset of statistical features from lesion data and deep features extracted from images using advanced models like EdgeNext, EfficientNet, EVA 2, and a custom model. The students carried out this work under supervision of Asst Prof Dr. Asad Mansoor Khan and Prof. Dr. Muhammad Usman Akram at BIOMISA Lab.
