British MP Rayner and Lord Khan visit NUST

NUST welcomed Ms Angela Rayner, the Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the British Parliament, and Lord Wajid Khan of the UK House of Lords, the Shadow Minister for Communities, Local Government and Housing, at NUST Islamabad Campus, on October 3, 2022.

Ms Rayner is also the Deputy Leader of the Labour Party, Shadow Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, Shadow Minister for the Cabinet Office and Shadow Secretary of State for the Future of Work.

They were received by Dr Rizwan Riaz, Pro-Rector Research, Innovation & Commercialisation. The ensuing meeting, also including Pro-Rector Academics Dr Osman Hasan, entailed a brief on NUST’s higher education landscape, its R&D structure, national and international partnerships, as well as its flagship project, the National Science & Technology Park (NSTP) that has been actively stimulating and nurturing innovation-led germination and growth of hi-tech entities in the country since its inception in 2019. The guests later visited NSTP and met with the team members of its most successful tech start-ups.

A bus tour of the campus was also arranged for Ms Rayner and Mr Khan to showcase NUST’s impressive infrastructure purposely built to facilitate its students, faculty, and staff in their respective functions as well as allow for recreational activities through multiple community centres, a highly elaborate sports complex, and the one-of-its-kind-in-Pakistan university-based riding club.

At the end of the visit, Ms Rayner and Mr Khan interacted with a large number of students and faculty. The guests received an array of interesting questions from the students on British politics, international issues and Pak-British relations.

The guests expressed their appreciation for NUST’s academic and R&D ecosystem and expressed high hopes for higher education collaborations between the UK and Pakistan in the future.
